Publish What You Pay-Nigeria South-East Zone Gets New Coordinator

Publish What You Pay-Nigeria (PWYP) has elected its South-East Zonal Coordinator, Miss Ogechukwu Enwelum emerged the winner in the election that took place at the South-East Annual General Meeting held at Owerri, Imo state on the 7th day of May 2017.

Miss Oge makes the second female PWYP-Nigeria Zonal Coordinator. In her acceptance speech, she promised to spur civil society organizations working in the zone to effectively work towards ensuring accountability and transparency in the extractive industry.

There is the urgent need for Civil Society Organizations to build the required capacity in order to address challenges facing the huge work in the extractive sector.

Oge replaces Mr. Emeka Ononamadu who resigned from the position when elected the National Coordinator PWYP-Nigeria.

Participants who were voters at the election emphasized the need for PWYP members to effectively collaborate; this they say, will give them the needed voice and force to achieve accountability and transparency in the extractive sector which is the core goal of PWYP-Nigeria.

Mr. Emeka Ononamadu scolded civil society organizations who have failed to speak against the corruption in the extractive sector, noting that South-East development is not for the government alone.

Imo and Abia states are 5th and 7th in the 9 oil producing States in the country but they continue to suffer under-development Mr. Emeka noted.

He urged all State Coordinators to map out the status of extractive activities, this will assist PWYP in creating appropriate intervention programs to address existing gaps, he noted.
